Narrow cobbled streets surrounded by tastefully restored houses of various eras, offer a pleasant stroll. The Archaeological Museum of Chania is in Chalepa, a historic suburb in Chania, housed in an iconic building constituting a landmark for the whole city. The museum’s permanent collection developed in three main halls on the ground floor and one more on the first floor, presenting the wealth of archaeological material that has been retrieved from the periphery of Chania through the course of time.
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is full of the wonderful works of the ancient inhabitants of the Prefecture of Chania from the third millennium before Christ. The findings emanates mainly from the rich archaeological places of Aptera, Minoa, Polirinia, Falasarna, Yrtakinas, Elirou, Lisos, Kantanos, Aradenas, Foinikas, Taras and Kidonias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tabakaria<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Tabakaria are a very special and at the same time important part of the emblematic district of Chania, Halepa. Although Halepa is known as the aristocratic part of the city, hosting some of the most beautiful buildings, Tabakaria was for more than two centuries the place where the tanneries of Chania operated.
There are restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the magnificent sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Folklore Museum of Chania – Cretan House<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the old city center of Chania there is the private Folk Museum “Cretan House”.
Through the themes of the museum unfolds the life and daily activities of the people in the countryside until the first half of the 20th century. Of particular interest are the textiles and embroidery in the museum which are creations of its founders and their students. These are replicas of rare embroidery that they managed to gather from all over Crete. Equally important are the embroidery tables depicting scenes from the local customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maritime Museum of Crete<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n

The “FIRKA” Fortress situated at the entrance of Chania Old Harbour and the Venetians (1204-1669) constructed it in order to be used as the local garrison. At the entrance of this Fortress it is situated the Maritime Museum of Crete, which was founded in order to house and perceive the Greek Maritime Traditions and those of Crete’s as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gouverneto Monastery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Gouverneto Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, which has been built in 1537 and located on the Akrotiri peninsula, approximately 4km from the Agia Triada Monastery or 19km north of Chania. The road is good for the most part and you will find several signs pointing to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity (but not the Monastery of Gouverneto). Taking this road, you will reach Agia Triada, where you will see the signs for Gouverneto Monastery.

You will reach the Monastery through an almost biblical and wild landscape, with rocks, wild olives and several turns. A paved path leads north from the Gouverneto Monastery into the Avlaki gorge that descends to the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the summer, prefer to walk in the gorge either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 20 minutes from the monastery, you will come across the famous Arkoudospelios cave with the bear that marbled and became a big rock inside the cave. Keep going down until you reach the famous Catholic Monastery with the church of Agios Ioannis the Hermit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gouverneto Monastery has very specific visiting hours, less than other monasteries, so you should be careful when choosing the days and times to visit it. Officially, the monastery is closed on Wednesdays and Fridays, while on Monday – Tuesday – Thursday the opening hours are 9 – 12 and 5 pm – 7 pm. . On weekends, the opening hours are 9 am – 11 am and 5 pm – 8 pm. As for your entrance to Gouverneto Monastery, remember the following: Entry is prohibited to those wearing shorts, swimwear and sleeveless tops.
